Что такое FD Calculator

The fixed deposit is the workhorse of Indian household savings. According to RBI data, more than ₹110 lakh crore sits in bank term deposits across India - roughly twice the entire mutual fund industry's AUM. The reasons are familiar: a known maturity, a guaranteed rate, capital safety up to ₹5 lakh per bank under DICGC insurance, and the simplicity of a single lump-sum that returns a single lump-sum a few years later. For senior citizens, conservative investors and emergency funds, the FD remains hard to beat.

This calculator implements the standard quarterly-compounding formula used by every scheduled commercial bank in India - SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Kotak, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank and the rest. Plug in the principal, the rate from your bank's brochure, the tenure, and you'll get a maturity value that matches your bank's number to the rupee. Small differences (₹5-50) typically come from how a bank handles the partial quarter at the start or end of a non-round-quarter tenure.

Как пользоваться

Как пользоваться: FD Calculator, шагов: 6

  1. Enter the FD principal (the lump-sum you want to deposit).

  2. Enter the bank's FD interest rate exactly as quoted in its brochure or website.

  3. Enter the tenure in months or years (a 543-day FD is 1.49 years).

  4. Choose the compounding frequency. Most Indian banks compound FDs quarterly; some senior-citizen and special-tenure FDs compound monthly.

  5. View the maturity value, total interest earned, and year-wise growth schedule.

  6. Compare with the recurring deposit calculator if you'd rather invest monthly than as a lump sum.

Как работает FD Calculator

A Fixed Deposit is a one-time deposit with a bank or NBFC for a fixed tenure at a fixed interest rate. Each quarter (in most cases), the bank computes the interest on your running balance, adds it to the principal, and uses the new balance for the next quarter's interest calculation. At maturity you can either withdraw the entire amount (cumulative FD) or have interest paid out monthly/quarterly during the term (non-cumulative FD).

Formula

M = P × (1 + r/n)^(n × t)

  • PPrincipal (deposit amount)
  • rAnnual interest rate (decimal)
  • nCompounding frequency per year
  • tTenure in years

Как FD Calculator получает результат

Indian banks default to quarterly compounding (n = 4) on standard fixed deposits. This is why a 7% FD yields about 7.19% effective annual return - the four times the rate compounds in a year add a small bonus over a flat 7%. The conversion from nominal rate to effective annual yield is EAY = (1 + r/n)^n − 1; you can use this calculator with t = 1 to compute it for any quoted rate.

For tenures shorter than three months, banks usually pay simple interest rather than compound. The cutover point and exact policy varies by bank - SBI's '7-179 day' bucket uses simple interest, HDFC starts quarterly compounding from day one. Read the bank's interest-calculation policy if your tenure is short.

Compounding starts on the date of deposit, not on a quarterly calendar boundary. So an FD opened on April 15 has its first quarter from April 15 to July 15, not April 1 to June 30. The maturity date is computed by adding the tenure in days (or months) to the start date - bank software does this automatically and the calculator's year-wise table mirrors this logic.

Special FD products - senior-citizen schemes, tax-saver FDs (Section 80C), green FDs - usually use the same formula but with a different rate. Tax-saver FDs lock in for 5 years and cannot be withdrawn early. Senior-citizen FDs typically pay 0.25-0.50% above the regular rate; some banks add a further 'super senior' bonus for those above 80.

Примеры

Разобранные примеры

Standard FD: ₹2,00,000 @ 7.0% for 5 years, quarterly compounding

M = 2,00,000 × (1 + 0.07/4)^(4×5) = ₹2,82,946. Total interest: ₹82,946. The same FD at simple interest would have earned just ₹70,000 - quarterly compounding adds nearly ₹13,000 over five years. After 10% TDS on interest above ₹40,000, in-hand interest is roughly ₹78,650.

Senior citizen FD: ₹5,00,000 @ 7.5% for 3 years

M = 5,00,000 × (1 + 0.075/4)^(4×3) = ₹6,25,144. Total interest: ₹1,25,144. Senior citizens get higher FD rates plus a higher TDS threshold (₹50,000 instead of ₹40,000) and can usually claim TDS exemption via Form 15H if their total income is below the basic exemption limit.

Tax-saver FD: ₹1,50,000 @ 6.5% for 5 years (locked-in)

M = 1,50,000 × (1 + 0.065/4)^(4×5) = ₹2,07,253. Total interest: ₹57,253. The deposit qualifies for an 80C deduction (up to ₹1.5 lakh per year combined with EPF, PPF, ELSS, etc.) so it serves a dual purpose. Trade-off: it cannot be broken or borrowed against during the 5-year lock-in.

Где применять

Когда использовать: FD Calculator

  • Building a 12-month emergency fund. Park 6-12 months of household expenses in 12-month FDs laddered across four quarters - one matures every three months, giving you regular access without breaking the rest.
  • Senior citizens replacing salary income. SCSS (Senior Citizens Savings Scheme) at 8.2% combined with bank senior-citizen FDs at 7.5-8% can produce roughly ₹40,000-50,000 of monthly interest from a ₹70-80 lakh corpus - enough to supplement a pension.
  • Children's short-term goals. School fee for the next academic year, vacation fund, planned purchase 2 years away - these are exactly the use cases where FDs beat both savings accounts (lower rate) and equity (too volatile for short horizons).
  • Tax-planning under 80C. A 5-year tax-saver FD is the simplest 80C instrument for those who don't want market-linked alternatives like ELSS. Lower expected return, but zero volatility.
Осторожно

Типичные ошибки и подводные камни

  • Spreading large deposits across multiple FDs in the same bank. DICGC insurance covers up to ₹5 lakh per bank, not per FD. To stay fully insured, split across multiple banks instead of multiple FDs in one bank.
  • Choosing the highest-interest small finance bank without checking financial strength. Some small finance banks offer 8-9% FDs because they need deposits - read the latest financials before depositing more than ₹5 lakh there.
  • Forgetting TDS. Banks deduct 10% TDS once interest crosses ₹40,000 in a financial year (₹50,000 for seniors). If you forgot to file Form 15G/H and your income is below the taxable limit, you'll have to claim a refund.
  • Letting cumulative FDs auto-renew at 'as-applicable' rates. Auto-renewal often happens at the prevailing card rate, which may be lower than what you got at the original booking. Reset the renewal manually each maturity.
  • Confusing the 'quarterly payout' of non-cumulative FDs with quarterly compounding. Cumulative FDs compound and pay at maturity; non-cumulative pay regularly without compounding - over 5 years the cumulative version is meaningfully larger.

Как получить больше от инструмента

  • Always compare effective annual yield, not the headline rate. Two banks at 7% can produce different maturities depending on monthly vs quarterly compounding.
  • Negotiate. Above ₹25 lakh, most banks have informal discretion to offer 5-15 basis points above their card rate, especially for premium-segment customers.
  • Use FD laddering. Instead of one ₹10 lakh FD for 5 years, book five ₹2 lakh FDs maturing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 years from now. Reinvest each as it matures - the average rate evens out across rate cycles.
  • Consider corporate FDs only if you're comfortable with the ratings. AAA-rated corporate FDs (HDFC, Bajaj, Mahindra Finance) typically pay 0.5-1% more than bank FDs but lack DICGC insurance.
  • If you're in the 30% slab and your goal is 5+ years away, evaluate debt mutual funds against FDs. Debt MFs can be more tax-efficient on long-term capital gains, depending on the latest rules.
Вопросы

Вопросы: FD Calculator

What is a Fixed Deposit?

A Fixed Deposit is a savings instrument where you lock a lump-sum with a bank or NBFC for a fixed period at a pre-agreed interest rate. It is one of the safest investment options available in India - covered up to ₹5 lakh per bank by DICGC deposit insurance.

How is FD interest calculated by Indian banks?

Most Indian banks (SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Kotak, etc.) compound FD interest quarterly. The maturity formula is M = P × (1 + r/4)^(4t), where r is the annual rate and t is the tenure in years. Small finance banks sometimes use monthly compounding which produces a slightly higher maturity for the same headline rate.

Is FD interest taxable?

Yes. Interest earned on FDs is fully taxable as 'income from other sources' at your slab rate. Banks deduct TDS at 10% if the annual interest exceeds ₹40,000 (₹50,000 for senior citizens). If your total income is below the taxable threshold, submit Form 15G or 15H to avoid TDS.

Can I break my FD before maturity?

Yes, but premature withdrawal usually attracts a lower interest rate (the 'card rate' for the actual tenure run) and a small penalty (typically 0.5-1%). Tax-saver FDs cannot be broken before 5 years under any circumstances.

Do senior citizens get higher FD rates?

Yes. Most Indian banks offer an additional 0.25%-0.50% on FD rates for senior citizens (60+). Some banks add a further 'super senior' bonus above 80. Special schemes like SCSS (Senior Citizens Savings Scheme) and PMVVY offer guaranteed rates of 7.4-8.2% even higher than bank senior-citizen FDs.

Is an FD better than a debt mutual fund?

FDs offer guaranteed returns and capital safety. Debt mutual funds may offer slightly higher post-tax returns over longer holding periods, but they carry interest-rate and credit risk. For a 1-3 year horizon and below the 30% tax slab, FDs are usually equal or better.

What is the difference between cumulative and non-cumulative FDs?

Cumulative FDs compound interest and pay it as a lump sum at maturity - best for wealth growth. Non-cumulative FDs pay interest regularly (monthly/quarterly/annually) without compounding - suited for retirees who need a steady cash flow but produce a smaller total maturity.

Can I take a loan against my FD?

Yes. Most banks offer a loan against FD up to 80-90% of the FD value at a rate roughly 1-2% higher than the FD rate. Useful for short-term liquidity needs without breaking the FD and losing premature-withdrawal interest.

Make confident money decisions

Indian financial products - home loans, fixed deposits, mutual funds, NPS, insurance - each carry their own quirks: monthly reducing balance vs flat-rate interest, quarterly vs monthly compounding, indexation on capital gains, the choice between the old and new tax regime. We design every finance calculator to use the formula that an Indian bank, AMC, or insurer would actually use, and to surface the assumptions in plain English so you can audit the result against your own statement.

Use this calculator alongside the EMI, SIP and inflation calculators to plan your money holistically. A standalone EMI number means little until you compare it with your in-hand salary, your existing debt-to-income ratio, and the impact of inflation on the real cost of the loan. The related-tool grid below makes it one click to chain these analyses together.
