概要

Mean, Median, Mode Calculatorとは

Mean, median and mode are the three measures of central tendency taught in every statistics course - and each captures something different about a dataset. The mean is the arithmetic average, used when you want a balance point that accounts for every value. The median is the middle value when sorted, used when you want a representative value that's robust against outliers. The mode is the most-frequent value, used when you want to know what's most common. Together with the range (a simple measure of spread), these four numbers give you a quick statistical summary of any dataset.

Choosing the right measure matters. Salary surveys typically report the median because a few very high earners would distort the mean. Real estate listings often quote median home price for the same reason. Test scores usually use mean because grade distributions are roughly symmetric. Inventory analysis uses mode (the most-frequent item size). Understanding which measure to trust - and when each can mislead - is one of the foundational skills of data literacy.

使い方

Mean, Median, Mode Calculatorの使い方(2ステップ)

  1. Paste numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines.

  2. Read mean (average), median (middle), mode (most frequent), and range (max − min).

計算式

Mean, Median, Mode Calculatorのしくみ

Mean adds all values and divides by count. Median sorts and picks the middle (or average of two middle values). Mode counts occurrences; ties produce multimodal results. Range is simply max minus min.

Formula

Mean = Σx / n Median = middle value (sorted) Mode = most frequent value(s) Range = max − min

  • ΣxSum of all values
  • nCount
計算の仕組み

Mean, Median, Mode Calculatorが結果を出す方法

Mean (arithmetic average): sum all values and divide by count. Sensitive to outliers - extreme values pull the mean toward them. Use when the distribution is roughly symmetric and you want an 'expected value' interpretation. Use case: average exam score, average daily temperature, average product weight in quality control.

Median: sort the values; the median is the middle value if count is odd, or the average of the two middle values if count is even. Robust against outliers - one extreme value doesn't shift it much. Use for skewed distributions and when outliers are present. Use case: salary surveys, real estate prices, response times.

Mode: the most-frequent value. Can be unimodal (one mode), bimodal (two modes), multimodal, or have no mode (every value occurs equally often). Most useful for categorical data ('most popular shoe size sold') or for discovering peaks in continuous distributions. Range: simply max − min. Quick to compute but fragile - entirely determined by extremes. For robust dispersion, prefer SD or IQR.

例題

計算例

Salaries at a small startup: ₹5L, ₹6L, ₹6L, ₹7L, ₹50L (founder)

Mean: ₹14.8L (misleadingly high). Median: ₹6L (representative of typical employees). Mode: ₹6L (most-frequent salary). Range: ₹45L. The mean is distorted by the founder's salary; the median and mode tell the real employee story.

Class test scores: 50, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85

Mean: 69.3, Median: 70, Mode: no repeated values, Range: 35. Mean and median agree closely → the distribution is roughly symmetric and reporting either is fine.

活用場面

Mean, Median, Mode Calculatorを使う場面

  • Statistics homework and exam prep - Class 9 onwards.
  • Survey result analysis - mean for symmetric data, median for skewed.
  • Sales and revenue analysis - typical transaction size.
  • Sports analytics - average vs typical player performance.
  • Salary benchmarking - almost always uses median, not mean.
  • Quality control - central tendency of manufactured part dimensions.
  • Real estate market analysis - median home price is the standard metric.
注意

よくある間違いと落とし穴

  • Using mean for heavily skewed data. Median is far more representative when outliers are present.
  • Forgetting that mode may not exist (all values unique) or may have ties (multimodal).
  • Treating range as a sufficient measure of spread. One outlier can dominate it.
  • Computing median without sorting first. The middle of unsorted data is meaningless.
  • Reporting only mean. Best practice: report mean ± SD (or median + IQR for skewed data) so readers see central tendency AND spread.
プロのコツ

このツールを使いこなす

  • Always sort the data before computing median or finding mode.
  • If mean and median differ significantly, the distribution is skewed - report the median.
  • For categorical data (shirt sizes, colors), mode is the only meaningful central-tendency measure.
  • Combine these measures with the standard deviation calculator on this site for a complete picture.
  • Plot the data (even a quick histogram) before deciding which central measure to trust.
FAQ

Mean, Median, Mode Calculatorに関するよくある質問

When does mean mislead?

Skewed distributions and outliers. One billionaire entering a small-town income survey makes the mean misleading; the median is more representative.

Median vs mean in salary surveys?

Median is preferred for salary because the few very high earners pull the mean upward, painting an overly rosy picture.

What if there are multiple modes?

The dataset is multimodal. Two modes (bimodal), three (trimodal). All values shown when tied.

Is range a good measure of spread?

Quick but fragile - one outlier dominates it. Standard deviation or interquartile range are more robust.

What does no mode mean?

Every value occurs the same number of times - there's no most-frequent value. The dataset is sometimes said to have no mode.

Can I compute weighted mean here?

Not directly - this tool treats every value equally. For weighted mean, multiply each value by its weight, sum, and divide by sum of weights.
