Memahami PPF Calculator

The Public Provident Fund is the rare Indian financial product that does almost everything well at once: it's backed by the sovereign, it's tax-free at all three stages (deposit, accrual and withdrawal - the EEE category), it offers a rate that has historically beaten bank fixed deposits, and it locks you into a 15-year horizon that prevents impulsive withdrawals. For salaried individuals already maxing out their EPF and looking to use the rest of their 80C limit, the PPF is often the obvious second slot.

This calculator implements the official PPF interest calculation rule. The Government of India sets the PPF rate quarterly (currently 7.1%) and interest is computed on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of each month, then credited at the end of the financial year. Plug in your annual contribution and the current rate, and the calculator will project the corpus at the 15-year maturity along with a year-wise growth schedule that matches what you'd see in your post-office or bank passbook.

Cara pakai

Cara kerja PPF Calculator

PPF is a long-term, government-backed savings scheme available to Indian residents. Contributions are tax-deductible under Section 80C, the interest is tax-free, and the maturity amount is tax-free (EEE category). Interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of every month, then credited annually on 31 March. Deposits made on or before the 5th of a month earn interest for that month.

Bagaimana PPF Calculator mendapatkan hasilnya

Each financial year, you can deposit up to ₹1,50,000 in your PPF account in any number of instalments (minimum ₹500 per year to keep it active). The deposit must be made before the 5th of a month for that month's balance to count for interest. The annual interest is computed on the minimum monthly balance and credited only at year-end on 31 March - so a deposit on April 5 earns interest for the entire year, while one on April 6 effectively misses a month.

After the initial 15-year lock-in, you can extend the account in 5-year blocks. There are two extension modes: 'with contribution' lets you keep depositing up to ₹1.5 lakh per year, and 'without contribution' freezes new deposits but lets the existing corpus continue earning interest. In the 'without contribution' mode, you're allowed one withdrawal per year of any amount. Most savvy PPF holders extend repeatedly - a 30-year-old who opens an account at 25 and extends till retirement can build a ₹1+ crore tax-free corpus.

Partial withdrawal is allowed from the seventh financial year onward, capped at 50% of the balance at the end of the fourth year preceding the withdrawal year (or the immediately preceding year, whichever is lower). Loans against the PPF balance are available between the 3rd and 6th years at 1% above the prevailing PPF rate. Premature closure is allowed after 5 years for serious medical emergencies, higher education or change of residency status - but with a 1% interest penalty.

Contoh

Contoh soal

Maxed-out PPF: ₹1.5 lakh per year for 15 years at 7.1%

Annual contribution ₹1,50,000, total deposit over 15 years ₹22,50,000. Maturity value: approximately ₹40,68,000. Of that, ₹18,18,000 is tax-free interest. If you extend for another 5 years with continued contributions, the maturity grows to about ₹66,58,000. Two more 5-year extensions at the same contribution take you past ₹1 crore - entirely tax-free.

Mid-level PPF: ₹50,000 per year for 15 years at 7.1%

Annual contribution ₹50,000, total deposit ₹7,50,000. Maturity value: approximately ₹13,56,000 with tax-free interest of ₹6,06,000. Even at this modest contribution, the post-tax effective return is competitive with most fixed-income products available to retail investors.

Kasus penggunaan

Kapan memakai PPF Calculator

  • Salaried employees in the 30% tax bracket who have already exhausted their EPF and want to use the remaining 80C limit on a guaranteed, tax-free product. PPF beats almost any alternative in the same risk category.
  • Self-employed professionals and freelancers - for whom EPF is not automatic - use PPF as their default retirement-grade savings instrument, supplementing it with NPS and ELSS.
  • Parents opening a PPF in a minor child's name to use the child's basic exemption limit and accumulate a long-horizon corpus for higher education. The combined family contribution limit (parents + minor's account) is still ₹1.5 lakh.
  • Senior citizens who already have PPF at maturity often opt for the 'without contribution' extension to keep earning the tax-free PPF rate on a corpus they'd otherwise have to redeploy elsewhere.
Perhatikan

Kesalahan dan jebakan umum

  • Depositing after the 5th of a month. You lose a full month of interest for the entire deposit - a real cost on lump-sum contributions.
  • Treating PPF as an emergency fund. The 15-year lock-in is real, and partial withdrawals only become available from year 7 with strict caps.
  • Forgetting to extend at maturity. The default at year 15 is to close the account; if you don't actively elect extension, you lose a free option of continued tax-free compounding.
  • Splitting contributions across multiple PPF accounts. A person can have only one PPF (plus optionally one for each minor child); banks and post offices flag duplicate accounts and you may forfeit interest on the duplicate.
  • Counting the employer's PF contribution against your PPF limit. EPF and PPF are separate; employer contribution doesn't reduce your PPF eligibility.
Tips pro

Manfaatkan alat ini lebih jauh

  • Always make a single lump-sum contribution between April 1 and April 5 - this earns the maximum interest possible for the year.
  • Open a PPF as early in life as possible, even with the minimum ₹500. Once the account is running, you've started the 15-year clock and can ramp up contributions later.
  • If you're in a high tax bracket and already filling 80C with EPF, PPF gives no additional 80C benefit - but the tax-free interest still beats most alternatives, so it remains a useful debt-asset bucket.
  • When the PPF rate changes mid-year, the new rate applies from the date of the notification - older interest on prior months stays at the older rate.
  • Pair PPF with the NPS calculator on this site to model the combined Section 80C and 80CCD(1B) tax saving stack.
FAQ

Pertanyaan tentang PPF Calculator

What is PPF?

Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a long-term, government-backed savings scheme that offers tax-free interest and a Section 80C deduction up to ₹1.5 lakh per year.

What is the current PPF interest rate?

The PPF rate is reviewed every quarter by the Government of India. As of the most recent revision, the rate is 7.1% per annum, compounded annually. Update the rate in the calculator if the government revises it.

What is the maximum I can deposit in PPF in a year?

₹1,50,000 per financial year per individual, in any number of instalments (subject to a minimum of ₹500/year).

Can I extend my PPF after 15 years?

Yes. After the 15-year lock-in, you can extend in 5-year blocks, either with or without further contributions. You can withdraw partially during extensions too.

Is PPF taxable?

PPF is in the EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) category. The amount you invest qualifies for an 80C deduction, the annual interest is tax-free, and the maturity amount is fully tax-free.

When is the best time to deposit in PPF?

Deposit on or before the 5th of every month - interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month. Lump-sum deposits made at the start of the financial year (April) earn the most interest over the year.

Make confident money decisions

Indian financial products - home loans, fixed deposits, mutual funds, NPS, insurance - each carry their own quirks: monthly reducing balance vs flat-rate interest, quarterly vs monthly compounding, indexation on capital gains, the choice between the old and new tax regime. We design every finance calculator to use the formula that an Indian bank, AMC, or insurer would actually use, and to surface the assumptions in plain English so you can audit the result against your own statement.

Use this calculator alongside the EMI, SIP and inflation calculators to plan your money holistically. A standalone EMI number means little until you compare it with your in-hand salary, your existing debt-to-income ratio, and the impact of inflation on the real cost of the loan. The related-tool grid below makes it one click to chain these analyses together.

The PPF Calculator is part of the Finance suite on Online Calculator Tools, alongside 6 related calculators. All tools share the same UI patterns, the same privacy-first rendering (nothing is sent to a server), and the same commitment to showing the formula and assumptions behind every result.
