Quick read

Cumulative cash inflows: ₹8,50,000. Project recovers the outlay within the cash-flow window.

Discounted payback is always longer than simple payback because future inflows are worth less in today's rupees.

Payback ignores cash flows after the threshold. Combine with IRR or NPV for a complete view of profitability.

Memahami Payback Period Calculator

Payback period is the most-asked question in small business and household capital investment decisions: 'when do I get my money back?' Buying solar panels for ₹5 lakh? Expected payback 5-7 years. Setting up a new restaurant kitchen for ₹15 lakh? Maybe 3-4 years. Buying commercial real estate? 12-18 years. The number is intuitive, easy to explain to non-finance people, and a useful quick filter - projects with payback longer than your patience or planning horizon get cut early.

This calculator computes both simple payback (cumulative cash flows reach the initial investment) and discounted payback (cumulative present-value cash flows reach the initial investment). The discounted version is more rigorous because it accounts for the time value of money - a rupee received in year 5 is worth less than a rupee received in year 1. For most retail decisions either version is useful; for formal business decisions, IRR or NPV are more rigorous metrics that complement payback.

Cara pakai

Memakai Payback Period Calculator dalam 4 langkah

  1. Enter the initial investment amount.

  2. Enter the expected cash inflow for each year.

  3. Optionally set a discount rate to also see the discounted payback.

  4. Read the simple payback (years), and discounted payback if a rate was set.

Cara kerja Payback Period Calculator

The calculator accumulates the yearly cash flows. Simple payback is when the cumulative inflows cross the initial outlay. Discounted payback first discounts each future inflow back to today's value at the discount rate, giving a more accurate (and slightly longer) payback.

Formula

Payback = years until Σ CFₜ ≥ Initial ; Discounted Payback uses Σ CFₜ / (1+r)^t

  • CFₜCash inflow at period t
  • InitialInitial outlay (made at t = 0)
  • rDiscount rate (for discounted payback)
Matematikanya

Bagaimana Payback Period Calculator mendapatkan hasilnya

Simple payback is found by accumulating annual cash flows year by year until the cumulative total equals or exceeds the initial investment. The exact payback period is the year in which the crossing happens plus the fractional progress through that year (e.g., if year 4 closes at 80% of the initial outlay and year 5 closes at 120%, payback is 4 + (20/40) = 4.5 years).

Discounted payback applies a discount rate to each year's cash flow before accumulating. Year 1's cash flow is divided by (1+r); year 2's by (1+r)²; and so on. The discount rate should reflect your opportunity cost - typically 8-12% for retail/business contexts where alternative investments are equity mutual funds or business reinvestment. Discounted payback is always longer than simple payback, often by 30-100% depending on the rate.

Payback's weakness is that it ignores cash flows after the payback period. A project with 4-year payback and zero further cash flows is much worse than another with 4-year payback and a 20-year tail of profitable inflows - but they have identical payback periods. Always check IRR or NPV alongside payback to ensure you're not picking a short-payback dud over a long-payback gold mine.

Contoh

Contoh soal

Rooftop solar: ₹4 lakh investment, ₹70,000/year savings on electricity

Simple payback: 4,00,000 / 70,000 ≈ 5.7 years. Discounted payback at 9% discount rate ≈ 7.5 years. Beyond payback, the system continues to save ₹70k/year for 15+ more years of useful life - significant total profit even though discounted payback is 7+ years. Without payback as a screen, many homeowners wouldn't proceed; without IRR/NPV alongside, they'd undervalue the long tail.

Restaurant equipment upgrade: ₹15 lakh, ₹4.5 lakh/year additional profit

Simple payback: 15 / 4.5 ≈ 3.33 years. Discounted at 12%: ≈ 4.5 years. Below the 5-year industry rule of thumb - a green light. But the calculator doesn't tell you whether profits will sustain past year 4; that needs separate analysis.

Kasus penggunaan

Kapan memakai Payback Period Calculator

  • Small business owners evaluating equipment upgrades, technology purchases or store renovations.
  • Homeowners considering rooftop solar, water-purification systems, or energy-efficient appliance upgrades.
  • Real-estate investors estimating when rental income alone (excluding appreciation) recoups the down payment.
  • EV buyers comparing electric vs petrol/diesel cars - payback computed against fuel savings.
Perhatikan

Kesalahan dan jebakan umum

  • Using payback as the sole metric. Ignores everything after the payback period; a project with 4-year payback and 20-year profit tail is much better than another with 4-year payback and 4-year life.
  • Ignoring discount rate. Simple payback overstates the attractiveness of long projects because it doesn't account for time value.
  • Confusing net profit with cash flow. Use cash inflows, not accounting profit (which can include depreciation and other non-cash items).
  • Assuming consistent annual returns. Most real projects have ramp-up periods, seasonal swings, and tail-end declines - model these explicitly.
  • Skipping inflation. Future cash flows in nominal terms can mask the fact that real (purchasing-power) returns are weaker.
Tips pro

Manfaatkan alat ini lebih jauh

  • Always pair payback with IRR or NPV. Payback tells you when you break even; IRR/NPV tell you whether the project is genuinely valuable.
  • Use realistic cash flow estimates, not optimistic ones. The downside scenarios determine whether the project survives a bad year.
  • For solar, EV and energy-efficiency decisions, factor in expected price increases for the avoided cost (electricity, fuel) - savings grow over time.
  • Set your own payback hurdle based on horizon. Don't accept a 10-year payback if you plan to sell the business in 5.

FAQ

Pertanyaan tentang Payback Period Calculator

Why use payback period if IRR exists?

Payback is intuitive and widely understood. Many small businesses prefer 'recover money in X years' over IRR's percentage. It's a useful quick filter - projects with payback longer than your patience get cut.

What is a good payback period?

Industry-dependent. Equipment 3-5 years. Solar panels 5-7. Real estate 12-15. Software 1-3. The shorter the better, all else equal.

Simple vs. discounted payback?

Simple ignores the time value of money. Discounted payback discounts future inflows, so it's always longer. Use discounted for high-rate environments or long projects.

What does payback miss?

Cash flows after the payback period. A project with 5-year payback but a 20-year tail of inflows is far better than a 5-year payback with no tail. Use IRR or NPV for the full picture.

Should I use cash flow or net profit?

Cash flow - it's the actual money returning to your pocket. Net profit may include non-cash items like depreciation that don't help payback.

Why is my discounted payback infinite?

If the present value of all your inflows never reaches the initial outlay (because of a high discount rate or low inflows), discounted payback is infinite - meaning the project is unprofitable at that rate.

Make confident money decisions

Indian financial products - home loans, fixed deposits, mutual funds, NPS, insurance - each carry their own quirks: monthly reducing balance vs flat-rate interest, quarterly vs monthly compounding, indexation on capital gains, the choice between the old and new tax regime. We design every finance calculator to use the formula that an Indian bank, AMC, or insurer would actually use, and to surface the assumptions in plain English so you can audit the result against your own statement.

Use this calculator alongside the EMI, SIP and inflation calculators to plan your money holistically. A standalone EMI number means little until you compare it with your in-hand salary, your existing debt-to-income ratio, and the impact of inflation on the real cost of the loan.
