परिचय

Half-Life Calculator को समझें

Half-life is the foundational concept for understanding any exponential-decay process - and there are many. In nuclear physics, half-life determines how long radioactive isotopes remain dangerous (Plutonium-239's 24,000-year half-life is why nuclear waste storage is a centuries-long problem). In medicine, drug half-life determines dosing intervals (Paracetamol's 2-hour half-life means it's nearly gone after 8-10 hours, so 4-6 hourly dosing makes sense). In archaeology, carbon-14 dating relies on the 5,730-year half-life to date organic remains up to ~50,000 years old. In capacitor discharge circuits, RC time constants describe the same exponential pattern.

For Class 11-12 physics in India (radioactivity chapter), half-life calculations appear in board exams every year. NEET aspirants encounter it in modern physics; JEE Main and Advanced test pharmacokinetics-style problems. Pharmacy and medicine students study drug half-life in pharmacology. This calculator works for any exponential decay process - just specify the initial amount, half-life, and elapsed time in consistent units. It also shows the decay constant λ = ln(2)/T and mean lifetime τ = T/ln(2) ≈ 1.443×T, useful in radiochemistry and continuous decay equations.

कैसे इस्तेमाल करें

Half-Life Calculator को 4 चरणों में इस्तेमाल करें

  1. Enter the initial quantity (mg, atoms, percent - any unit).

  2. Enter the half-life (must be in the same time units as elapsed time).

  3. Enter the elapsed time.

  4. See remaining quantity, fraction left, decay constant and mean lifetime.

Half-Life Calculator कैसे काम करता है

Each half-life cuts the remaining quantity in half. After 1 half-life: 50% left. After 2: 25%. After 3: 12.5%. The continuous form uses N(t) = N₀ × (1/2)^(t/T) which works for any t, not just multiples of T.

Formula

N(t) = N₀ × (1/2)^(t/T) λ = ln(2) / T (decay constant) Mean lifetime = T / ln(2)

Half-Life Calculator जवाब कैसे निकालता है

Exponential decay law: N(t) = N₀ × (1/2)^(t/T), where N(t) is the amount remaining at time t, N₀ is initial amount, and T is the half-life. After one half-life (t = T), the result is N₀/2. After two half-lives (t = 2T), N₀/4. After n half-lives, N₀ × (1/2)ⁿ. The formula works for any t including non-integer multiples of T - the continuous form makes calculations possible at any time point.

Alternative formulations: N(t) = N₀ × e^(−λt) where λ = ln(2)/T ≈ 0.693/T is the decay constant. Both formulations give identical results; the e-form is preferred in continuous mathematics and differential equations. Mean lifetime τ = 1/λ = T/ln(2) ≈ 1.443T - the average time an individual particle 'lives' before decaying, longer than half-life because the distribution is skewed.

Practical interpretation: after 5 half-lives, only 1/32 ≈ 3.1% remains. After 7 half-lives, ~0.8%. After 10 half-lives, ~0.1%. Clinical pharmacology uses '5 half-lives' as the rule of thumb for 'drug effectively eliminated' - by then, residual is negligible for most practical purposes. For radioactive waste storage, '10 half-lives' is often cited as 'safe' (though some short-lived isotopes produce hazardous intermediate products).

उदाहरण

हल किए उदाहरण

Paracetamol: 1000mg dose, T = 2 hours, 6 hours later

Half-lives elapsed: 6/2 = 3. Remaining: 1000 × (1/2)³ = 125 mg = 12.5%. After 10 hours (5 half-lives): 31 mg = 3.1%. Explains why 4-6 hourly dosing is recommended.

Radioactive iodine I-131 used in thyroid imaging: 100 MBq initial, T = 8 days, after 30 days

30/8 = 3.75 half-lives. Remaining: 100 × (1/2)³·⁷⁵ = 7.4 MBq. After 80 days (10 half-lives): 0.098 MBq, virtually undetectable.

Carbon-14 dating: ancient wood with 25% C-14 of fresh sample

25% = (1/2)² = 2 half-lives elapsed. Age = 2 × 5730 = 11,460 years old. Dating accuracy ±50-100 years for this age range.

ध्यान दें

आम गलतियाँ और सावधानियाँ

  • Mixing units of half-life and elapsed time. Both must be in the same unit (hours, days, years).
  • Treating half-life as exactly half the lifetime. Mean lifetime is 1.443× half-life.
  • Assuming linear decay instead of exponential. The drop is steeper early and gentler later.
  • Ignoring biological vs nuclear half-life. Drug 'biological half-life' depends on metabolism; isotope 'physical half-life' is fixed.
  • Forgetting decay-product effects in some isotope chains (uranium-235 decays through many intermediate isotopes).

  • Remember: 5 half-lives ≈ 97% gone; 10 half-lives ≈ 99.9% gone.
  • For drugs, dose frequency is typically chosen to maintain therapeutic blood levels above the half-life decay floor.
  • Use mean lifetime τ = 1.443×T for continuous-decay equations involving λ.
  • Half-life is constant for a given substance - independent of starting amount or temperature.

अक्सर पूछे सवाल

Half-Life Calculator के बारे में सवाल

How is half-life related to mean lifetime?

Mean lifetime τ = T / ln(2) ≈ T / 0.693. Mean lifetime is always longer than the half-life - about 1.44× longer.

Common half-lives in medicine?

Caffeine ~5 hr, paracetamol ~2 hr, alcohol ~1 hr (zero-order, not first-order strictly), warfarin ~40 hr. Drug half-life sets the dosing interval.

Common half-lives in nuclear physics?

Carbon-14 ~5,730 years (radiocarbon dating). Iodine-131 ~8 days (thyroid imaging). Plutonium-239 ~24,000 years.

Why does half-life matter in dating?

Known half-lives let scientists work backwards from current isotope ratios to estimate age. Carbon-14 dating works for organic material up to ~50,000 years old.

Is half-life constant?

For most processes yes - it's a property of the substance and process. Only exotic conditions (extreme pressure, electron capture in some isotopes) can affect it.

How many half-lives until effectively zero?

After 5 half-lives, only 3.1% remains. After 10, just 0.1%. Most clinical drug 'wash-out' assumes 5-7 half-lives.
