9-to-6 office shift with 1-hour lunch break
Start 9:00 AM, end 6:00 PM = 9 hours elapsed. Minus 60-minute lunch = 8:00 worked hours = 8.0 decimal. Standard corporate workday under most Indian company HR policies.
Calculate hours and minutes between two clock times - handy for timesheets, billable hours, gym duration tracking and shift planning. Optional break-time deduction for accurate work-hour totals.
If earlier than start, treated as overnight

Hours calculator answers a question millions of working people face every day: 'I started at 9 AM and finished at 6:30 PM with a 45-minute lunch break - how many hours did I actually work?' The answer is 8:45 worked hours (9 hours 30 minutes elapsed minus 45 minutes break). Manually computing this is error-prone, especially when shifts cross midnight (10 PM to 6 AM = 8 hours, not -16). This calculator handles all the edge cases automatically and outputs both HH:MM format (for schedules) and decimal hours (for payroll multiplication with hourly rate).
Heavy users in India: hourly-wage workers (factory labour, construction, healthcare staff, hospitality workers), freelance consultants billing by hour, IT support staff doing on-call hours, gig workers (Swiggy, Zomato, Ola, Uber drivers logging work time), and HR professionals processing payroll. The Indian Factories Act caps adult worker daily hours at 9 with weekly maximum 48; anything beyond becomes overtime at double pay. This calculator gives you the worked hours; multiply by hourly rate for wage, or compare against 9/48 hour thresholds for overtime computation.
Enter the start time (24h or AM/PM).
Enter the end time.
Optionally enter break minutes to deduct.
See worked hours in HH:MM and decimal format.
Both times are converted to minutes since midnight. End − start gives the diff. If end is earlier than start, 24 hours are added (overnight shifts). Break minutes are subtracted last.
Hours = (End − Start) − Break minutes If End < Start: add 24 hr (overnight)
Algorithm: convert start and end times to minutes since midnight (00:00). 9:30 AM = 570 minutes; 6:00 PM = 1080 minutes. Subtract: 1080 - 570 = 510 minutes = 8 hours 30 minutes. Subtract break minutes for net worked time. Output both HH:MM (8:30) and decimal (8.5).
Overnight shift handling: when end is earlier than start (e.g., 10 PM to 6 AM), the calculator detects this and adds 24 hours (1440 minutes) before subtracting. So 6 AM = 1800 (treated as 30:00 next day), minus 10 PM = 1320 (treated as 22:00 today) = 480 minutes = 8 hours. Works seamlessly for night shifts, hospital duty rotations, and ATM/security guard schedules.
Break handling: in India, breaks are typically unpaid (deducted from working hours). The Factories Act requires a 30-minute break for every 5 hours of work; many IT and corporate employers grant 60-minute lunch breaks. Short tea breaks (5-15 minutes) are usually paid (not deducted). For payroll, deduct only unpaid breaks. Enter the total break minutes for the day; the calculator subtracts them from gross elapsed hours.
Start 9:00 AM, end 6:00 PM = 9 hours elapsed. Minus 60-minute lunch = 8:00 worked hours = 8.0 decimal. Standard corporate workday under most Indian company HR policies.
10:00 PM → 7:00 AM = 9 hours elapsed (crosses midnight). Minus 30 minutes = 8:30 worked = 8.5 decimal. Hospital nurse and doctor rotations follow this pattern.
10:30 → 16:15 = 5h 45min elapsed. Minus 45 min lunch = 5:00 worked = 5.0 decimal. At ₹1,500/hr: ₹7,500 billable for the session.
Just enter the start (e.g. 22:00) and end (06:00). The calculator detects end < start and adds 24 hours, giving 8 hours.
Depends on your contract. In India, breaks are typically unpaid (deducted). In some sectors, short breaks (<15 min) are paid (not deducted).
Add up all break minutes and enter the total. Or use the Time Card Calculator for multi-day, multi-break tracking.
Decimal is for payroll math (hours × rate). HH:MM is for human-readable schedules. Both shown.
Date math, password generation, QR codes, IP subnets, base64 encoding, dew point, dice rolls, age calculations - none of these are 'big' problems individually, but they are the small frictions that interrupt your day. This tool runs entirely in your browser, has no popup, no chat widget and no tracking inside the calculation, so you can finish the task and move on.
Many tools in the Daily Utilities category complement each other - date difference + day counter + day-of-the-week, or password generator + QR code + base64 encoder. The related-tool grid links them together so you can move between adjacent problems in a click.
